Savannah: Living Life with Southern Style - My Family Travels
5_4

The city of Savannah, Georgia is filled with southern charm and is widely regarded as the crown of Georgia’s low country.  The midtown area of the city is dotted with landscaped squares that are a great place to start if you want to indulge in the history of the city. The city is designed in a series of grids that were used for cotton plantations in the mid-eighteenth century.  Today, you will find mansions and several world-famous monuments on these properties. One of the most prominent locations to visit is Forsyth Park. This park was made famous in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and is the most photographed location in Savannah.  The park is open to sun-bathing, picnics, or lounging and recreational sports. If you wish to know more about the history of the city, there are trolley rides, walking tours and for the romantic at heart; horse-drawn carriages.  These tours provide an insight to our charming city that include our role in the civil war, industry in the south and ghost tours that visit another famous landmark, Bonaventure Cemetery.  We even have a rich history with one of the most notorious pirates to ever sail the south Atlantic, Edward Teach commonly known as Blackbeard.

Additional entertainment in Savannah includes visiting the Savannah college of Art and Design’s (SCAD) Art Museum, the Telfair Museum, or the home of composer and performer Johnny Mercer.   For those interested in Broadway style performances, shows can be seen at the historic Lucas Theater, or the Savannah Theatre.  There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a round or two of golf, or take in a minor league baseball game with the Savannah Sand Gnats at Grayson Stadium.  The low country and coastal ecosystem play host to a variety of nature trails and endless species of fish, snakes, birds, and other wildlife.  Our beaches make up the portion of Georgia coastline known as the Golden Isles.

A trip to Savannah would not be complete without taking in some of our famous cuisine.  Paula Deen’s restaurant “The Lady & Son’s” offers typical southern fare and includes everything from fried chicken, and homemade mac ‘n cheese to the best peach cobbler and sweet tea available.  For those desiring a more upscale restaurant, try the 45 Bistro and complete your dining adventure at the Back In the Day Bakery where you can enjoy Savannah’s best banana pudding, cupcakes, and chocolate brownies.

Every city boasts a quaint shopping district, Savannah’s can be found on Broughton Street. Antique shops, Art galleries, clothing stores, and boutiques can be found here.   All within a sun drenched stroll to other popular locations, The City Market and River Street.  River Street celebrates the first Saturday of each month by hosting street musicians, vendors, crafts and fireworks over the Savannah River.

In March, the population of Savannah swells from 250,000 to over a million as tourists flocks to the city to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day.  Each year the river is turned green and the local economy enjoys an increase in tourism.  We are proud to host one of the largest celebrations in the nation and many of the visitors return year after year.

Everything from ghosts to leprechauns and pirates to poets, Savannah has it all. Come experience life drenched in the warm South Georgia sun and golden beaches of coastal Georgia.

Absolutely love this list of Mardi Gras celebrations outside New Orleans! Each destination seems to offer its own unique blend of culture, music, and vibrant festivities. While I’m tempted to explore them all, I can’t help but dream of experiencing the colorful chaos of Mardi Gras in Goa, India. Exploring India’s rich cultural tapestry during this festive season would undoubtedly be an unforgettable adventure. Thanks for inspiring wanderlust with these fantastic recommendations!
