Ashland, Wisconsin- A historic town on Lake Superior's magnificent Chequamegon Bay - My Family Travels

There are many things that could make an outsider feel comfortable in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Ashland combines the nature of the area with wonderful restaurants and local art appreciation.

Ashland features an abundance of nature. Many events highlight or revolve around the natural beauty of this area. Northland College, located in Ashland, boasts unique environmental degrees with many outdoor opportunities for students. The Book Across the Bay, a February ski race, features the majesty of Lake Superior as skiers, runners, and walkers, make their way 10 km across the ice on a February night that is lit by homemade luminaries and the Moon. The town has beautiful and well-maintained public parks and beaches. Prentice Park features woodsy trails, a large pavilion, natural spring wells and even campsites! The 2 largest beaches in Ashland are Maslowski Beach and the Kerher RV Park, beach and playground. Ashland is also home to spacious paved trails of the northern Wisconsin Tri-County Corridor that makes biking or walking quite easy. Ashland’s parks, places, and events have made the beautiful natural landscape even more usable.

Another great thing about Ashland is its high quality restaurants. Ashland is fortunate to be home to the El Dorado Mexican Restaurant. Many people have stated that the Mexican at El Dorado’s is better than Mexican food in Mexico. There are many affordable and delicious options. El Dorado is located seconds from Maslowski beach and just feet away from Lake Superior. The Deepwater Grille is Ashland’s finest gourmet food restaurant with its famous home-made sweet potato fries. Molly Cooper’s has a great and affordable all-you-can-eat Friday night fish fry and is located in the historic Hotel Chequamegon. Ashland is fortunate to be home to so many wonderful dining options!

Many people are attracted to Ashland because of its historic downtown! There are murals on almost every block on Main Street in Ashland. Ashland’s murals depict the true history of our town. Murals feature sights of the 1950’s, a look back at the time of the local lumberjacks, a quality depiction of Ashland’s famous ore dock and a mural in honor of men and women who have served their nation. Main Street also hosts many family businesses located in historic buildings that have been a big part of Ashland’s progress.

Come to Ashland to see our beautiful lake, our beautiful parks, eat our delicious food, and see our historic downtown!

Reading Fran Falkin’s insights took me back to my first trip with Whiskers, my feline companion. The chaos of ensuring he was comfortable amidst the hustle of the airport was a lesson in patience. Had I come across these invaluable tips earlier, our journey would’ve been as smooth as a calm sea.

I read your article on the Sheep of Sun Valley and I found it very fascinating and enjoyable. You have given a detailed and colorful account of your experience at the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which celebrates the history and culture of sheepherding in Idaho. I think your article is a great way to introduce this unique and fun event to other travelers and families who are looking for a different and memorable adventure.
