Your Home Away From Home - My Family Travels

When traveling, its hard to find that home away from home. You miss your comfy bed, the home aroma, quiet sound, and the serene feeling. Journeying to an unknown location, leads to confusion, stress, headaches, and a bottle of ibuprofen to aid the pain. In Ocean Beach and Point Loma, the peninsula of San Diego, you are immune to the symptoms of being homesick and you wish you could stay longer.

That sunny San Diego weather allows you to go sightseeing wherever you journey. Every year, in remembrance of Juan Cabrillo of Spain, Point Loma recreates the scene of Cabrillo stepping foot and claiming the land in 1542. The Point, which is part of the military, has a memorial for the fallen soldiers and a cemetery for those who served and passed away. Further down the point is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse where you learn about its use and about the family who lived there at one point. Head down to the museum and learning centers to learn about the use of the area during WWII. If you are tired of the history lesson, go on a hike for exercise or drive down to the tide pools and check out all sorts of creatures such as sea anemones and sea urchins. Children are easily attracted to the sea creatures. You may even see dolphins!

Sunset Cliffs is a very popular street because at the end you are lead to the perfect spot for finding peaceful little beaches, surfing, and watching the sunset. “No Surf,” called “Nobes” by locals, requires some skill to reach because it includes a little hike on the side of the cliffs. “Bermuda,” which is at the end of Bermuda Street allows locals to enjoy some peaceful time away from the crazy, chaotic main beach, Ocean Beach Beach, which we call it “OB,” we have a variety of beaches to fit your desire!

The main street in Ocean Beach is called Newport Avenue. On that street you find all the antique shops, the mom and pop stores, and also the famous Hodad’s hamburger joint, the line is always all the way out the door! That street holds the Annual OB Street Fair, OB Artwalk, OB Oktoberfest, and the famous OB Christmas Parade where the whole community comes together and enjoys a great time with other community members.

The OB pier, at the end of Niagara Street, is the longest concrete pier in the west coast and second longest pier under the Santa Cruz pier. This is the place to head to to enjoy fishing and a nice “cup of Joe” from the Cafe that sits on top.

Ocean Beach is full of history dating back to the days of Wonderland. There was once an indoor sea water pool on the cliffs too! There isn’t one specific person that defines “OB”, everyone together makes it OB. Willie, who lives in a small house probably the size of your bathroom, is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet. He knows Ocean Beach inside and out. He is very open to meeting new people so feel free to talk to him at Farmers Market held every Wednesday, he doesn’t bite!

Even though Ocean Beach is a small community, it is very diverse and we all share the same thing, we call OB our home and label ourselves as “Obecians.” We are similar to everyone else in the world because we call someplace our “home” whether figurative or literal. Nothing comes between ourselves and our place we call “home,” so our home is your home away from home.

Absolutely love this list of Mardi Gras celebrations outside New Orleans! Each destination seems to offer its own unique blend of culture, music, and vibrant festivities. While I’m tempted to explore them all, I can’t help but dream of experiencing the colorful chaos of Mardi Gras in Goa, India. Exploring India’s rich cultural tapestry during this festive season would undoubtedly be an unforgettable adventure. Thanks for inspiring wanderlust with these fantastic recommendations!
