La Mirada. When I say this name aloud, it does not strike me as a place that is grand or filled with urgency and movement. Instead, if I did not live here I would pass it up as just another city within the immense confines of the United States. However, upon further inspection, you would find it very different from a general city or town that a traveler might visit. The people, the leisurely pace that everyone moves at, and the clean non-smog filled breeze that blows just 30 miles from the Southern California Beaches give this area a very calming mood.
During my few years of residence here, I have come to love this area because of the people who treats each other with respect and an amiable attitude. The friendly demeanor that the residents have can easily be seen when visiting one of my favorite areas, La Mirada Park.
One of my favorite past times is playing basketball. I often visit the nearby gymnasium that is located within La Mirada Park to play some pick-up games with the other adults and teens. The gym itself is not an impressive structure that one might be able to easily spot from a distance, in fact; it is comparable in its equipment and layout to any 24HourFitness in your area, but that is where the similarities end. The sociable staff and visitors inside easily negate the lack of physical splendor in the gym’s design. It is often seen in the 24HourFitness basketball court that one group is playing full-court games, selfishly taking up the whole area. However, in La Mirada gym there is no such egocentric actions since the players who arrived earlier eagerly welcomes any newcomers that wish to play. This magnanimous attitude is what makes this gym special. There is no judging of a person based on skill or build, all the visitors care about is having fun while staying fit. Tension that may arise from being so near to strangers is nearly imperceptible when playing at La Mirada gym.
To provide a refreshing form of entertainment, Splash! a water theme park is located right next to the gym. It is another area where you may have fun while enjoying the lighter and less suffocating feeling that you may get from visiting Soak City, which is only a few miles from here.
The recreational fun that one can experience at La Mirada Park is not limited to just the gym and Splash!, it is also the place of leisurely activities such as fishing at the pond or reading at the library across the street. This city’s tempered and relaxed atmosphere can be felt by visiting La Mirada Park.
