The three hour train to New York left the station when the air was still crisp and new at seven in the morning. My mom, two aunts, three cousins and I had our overnight bags packed to the brim, ready for the next two November days to be spent in Times Square. Penn station on a Friday morning in November was a completely different world from the town in Massachusetts I’ve lived in all my life. I was immediately immersed in the bustling lifestyle that permeates the New York air. With confidence in their every step and a passionate determined look in every one of their eyes, these natives knew where they were going and I couldn’t help but feel misplaced among them. I had never seen such crowded streets or as much animated action on every corner. I wasn’t prepared for this fast moving conduct, but I wanted to take on whatever it threw at me.
Our first destination was Radio City Music Hall on Rockefeller Center. With the close proximity to the holidays, it was decked out in sparkling winter décor complete with a larger than life red glistening Christmas tree. Even in the light of the afternoon, Radio City Music Hall’s lights shone out in a way that made a person giddy just glancing at it. It held the promise of a new experience and a picturesque moment that seems unreal to the average dreamer. Every moment spent in New York was like a child turning the corner in Disneyland to find a new and enticing adventure. Everything there was amplified and magnified compared to what I was used to in my town. The noise, the people, even the stores were fanciful.
The Rockettes’ performance at Radio City Music Hall was mesmerizing. The purpose of the trip to New York was to see the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, and the show certainly delivered on their promise. The kicks, the turns, the costumes were all timed to a millisecond and their movements seemed effortless. As a child, I had always dreamed of seeing them perform on a stage larger than I had ever seen and captivate in a performance that involved hundreds of people that was put on nearly every night.
Throughout my two days spent in New York, I was able to get a new perspective on the world. Confined to the small town I was from all my life, I wasn’t able to see the world from a larger scale. All the people on the streets moving towards their individual goal and working every day in the city of opportunity to achieve that dream was an inspiration to me. Their passion made me feel like I had so much ahead of me and so much to strive for. Everyone’s determation and collaboration in the Rockette’s show displayed a collaborative effort that I can see is important to strive for. I’m now able to see the world from a new point of view and I understand that it takes more than just my individual effort to achieve a goal. We all must have ambition, perseverance and the ability to work together to accomplish something larger than ourselves.

Great place for kids. My 2 and 4 year old tried every water slide, pool, and toy. They loved the beach as well with the calm, warm waters. It was far from a relaxing trip but this one was all about the kids.

I live in Jacksonville and there is no longer a ‘lively waterfront’. The shops and restaurants were demolished after a mass shooting at one of the establishments. Head to the beach not downtown!! There is a lovely historic district called Avondale/Riverside area. It is absolutely beautiful with shops and restaurants and a beautiful park with a kick a** playground! The neighborhoods sit on the St John’s River. The old homes are big and beautiful. I walk that area regularly and have lived there. Stunning!!!
