On Wednesday, July 22, Robert John Burck, also known as the Naked Cowboy, announced that he will be running for Mayor of New York in the upcoming election against current mayor, Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The Naked Cowboy is a widely popular street performer usually seen on the streets of Times Square in his trademark cowboy hat, boots, and underwear.
Since starting out as a street performer, Burck has appeared in ads, music videos, and TV, and even released his own music album.
On his official website, he sounded off on his issues and why he decided to run, citing the economic crisis and his ability to make due with the small amount he has, “It’s time to tighten the belt, but of course that’s just a saying because I don’t even wear a belt. But that’s my point – I don’t need a belt.”
Following in the steps of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura, Al Franken, and more, can the Naked Cowboy make the transition from entertainer to politician, and be taken seriously?
