The Disney Magic lives up to its name. My Daughter Daelyn and I had the opportunity to experience a little bit of the Disney Magic cruise ship while it was at port in New York City. During the time between arrival and the next departure, we were able to experience what fun, food and entertainment will be available to travelers on the ship in 2017.
We were also lucky enough, along with a few hundred children from local Boys and Girls clubs, to see one of the ship’s latest productions out of the Voyages Repertory.
Unraveling Tangled & Making it New
When I heard it was a production of “Tangled,” I was dubious. How would they recreate the entire animated spectacle?
Would the story be the same without crazy trails of hair, which on occasion needs to glow from within — sometimes underwater?
How would they match the awe of a sky full of lanterns, and how would they be able to cast my favorite character, Maximus, the horse?
Leave it to the unmatchable creativity of Disney Imagineers, who make it all happen and more. The characters swam; the hair glowed and had a life of its own; the lanterns floated through the audience filling the theater; and through the talents of a fantastic performer, Maximus lost none of his humor or charisma.
The production blew me away and my 15-year-old smiled with the same awe she had when she saw the film.
Magical Meal of Animation
After the show we were able to sample a meal in the Animator’s Palate. When seated, your placemat instructs you to draw your own character. Drawing on placemats may not seem so unique, but the surprise is yet to come. During the meal, which consists of a surprising blend of flavors, screens project classic and modern Disney animations, with a peak into how they are made.
As you are watching, some unfamiliar characters start to appear, as the drawings from your placemats come to life, dancing along next to all your favorite Disney pals.
Cast of Wonder
The other thing that really stood out on my mini adventure, was the cast mates — what they call their Disney crew, performers, waiters and cruise directors. Cast mates will make you wonder who is having more fun you or them.
They are very happy doing what they do, and the joy all around you is contagious.
News & Marvels from Disney on the High Seas
Some upcoming Disney fun had my inner child bursting with excitement. In fall of 2017, “Marvel Day at Sea” will be kicking off aboard certain Canada and Bahamas cruises leaving from New York City; Disney Cruise Lines has all the info.
I am a card-carrying member of Marvel Comic Collecting and the idea of a whole day of super heroes and super villians, sounds like it will be pow zap kaboom thrilling.
Need to catch up on some blockbuster Marvel movies you may have missed? Well, they are playing all day along with Marvel/Disney shows.
Meet and greets with Spidey, Captain America and Thor.. maybe Peter Parker can snap a picture of you and Spiderman, if you can catch him.
Feeling a little competitive? Test your knowledge of everything Marvel with Trivia challenges. There will be themed activities all day and for all ages, culminating with some super inspired Pyrotechnics.
No better port than NYC to board the fun, after a quick stop at Forbidden Planet to stock up on some comics for autographs, of course.
