Well, this vacation was bitter sweet. You see my grandfather was diagnosed with colon cancer the spring of 2004. As his cancer progressed his doctors told him that if there were things he wanted to see or do, that he should do them now. Knowing that he wasn’t getting any better we all decided to go on a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands.
My grandparents, my aunts and my father, mother and little sister went to Hawaii. One of the most memorable moments on the cruise was when my dad surprised my mom, and asked her to marry him again. He had everything arranged. We went to a beautiful beach and my parents were married. My grandfather was the witness. It was the most romantic thing I have ever witnessed in my whole entire life.
This was on our first day of the cruise. The rest of the week-long cruise was filled with dinners together, sitting on the beach beside my grandfather, watching my family get along, and all the time knowing that this could very well be the last time we go on vacation with him.
The memories that I have will be with me forever. In December of that same year my grandfather died from his cancer. Now I know that this may seem to be a very sad vacation, but it wasn’t. It was the best vacation I have ever had, and I will remember my gradfather sitting on that beach in Maui, in his bermuda shorts and his colorful Hawaiian shirt. He was so happy to be with his family, and we were happy to be with him.
