I am a junior in high school and am feeling the pressure to go to college. I have been told over and over again that one should visit the schools prior to making any decisions. However, like most kids my age, I had no idea where I wanted to look except that I wanted a small university. My parents planned a trip to Florida to visit friends and my mom, unbeknownst to me, made three appointments: Florida State, University of Florida and Stetson University.
When we arrived, of course I wanted to do what most vacationers want to do, play a little tennis, swim, eat and of course visit Disney. My mom had something else in mind. With reluctance, I did visit those three universities and I found out something about myself — I didn’t want to go to a small university like Stetson, but fell in love with both FS and UF which I will be applying to this fall.
We were still able to do the touristy thing and have a great deal of fun as a family, but more importantly I now know where I want to go and I have my mom to thank for it. So, thank you mom, for knowing me better than I know myself and for always pushing me out of my comfort zone.
