This past June, I went on a great vacation. Usually when I go on vacation, it’s with my family, or my best friend who took me on vacations with her family the past few years. This vacation was different.
A few months before my vacation, my boyfriend told me about the three vacations he was going on right after school ended this year. This meant I wouldn’t see him for three weeks. At first it didn’t really seem that bad until it got closer to him leaving.
He came back from the first vacation early, which made me very happy, but he also asked me if I wanted to come with him and his family on the second one. Of course, I was very exited and told him I would go. The next day I packed my bags and we left.
Outer Banks, North Carolina. That was our destination. My boyfriend and I rode in the car with his grandparents for 10 hours – we slept most of the way.
When we got there, we met every one else that was staying at the house with us. Grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, everyone was there. Of course, they weren’t my family, but they made me feel very welcome.
While we were there, we went to the beach to find seashells, we rode our bikes to the shopping centers nearby, to the close restaurants, and to get ice cream a few times. We also caught some fish, and fed the turtles in the pond by our house.
I’m glad I went not only because it was a chance to go to the beach, and I would be spending a whole week with my boyfriend, but it gave me the chance to really get to know his family, who before this trip, I didn’t really know that well.
I spent time with his sister, who’s my age, and his cousin. My boyfriend and I also spent most of our time with his brother and his brother’s girlfriend. It was nice because my boyfriend and his brother never really got along, and it was great for us to see them having fun together. I also got to know his grandparents and his father, which was a lot of fun.
They were funny and very nice, which made it easier for me to feel comfortable with all these people I didn’t really know. Another reason I’m glad I went was because I was with my boyfriend for a week straight. We learned a lot about each other, good and bad.
Likes and dislikes, how his family lives and what they like to do. For example, in my family, we really never say grace. But on vacation, his family did. Also when we were eating, all the years my mom tried to tell me to sit up straight and not eat with my elbows on the table, finally caught up with me. I hope maybe on my family’s next vacation, I can take him along so that my family can get to know him, and he could have hopefully, the same great experience I had on our vacation together.
