Family Vacations are Really About Family - My Family Travels

This year’s vacation took our family to South Carolina on Hilton Head Island. My parents are divorced so every year my sister and I go on vacation with my dad, step-mom and stepsisters.

At first glimpse of this beach side resort it seemed that there would not be too much for teenage girls to do besides go to the beach and play tennis or golf, which none of us play.

Hilton Head was indeed beautiful with it many trees, beautiful homes and beach. We experienced a dolphin spotting tour and fireworks and played mini-golf, but in comparison to previous vacations, this one was on the dull side.

The week was going by slow and I was getting bored. Then, it struck me while I was sitting on the deck of our condo¬†why I was on this vacation. It wasn’t to do tons of things or to spend money on things I didn’t need. The true reason was to have uninterrupted time with my dad.

I will be a senior this fall and this could possibly be the last family vacation I get to spend with my dad, so I decided to quit thinking only of my self and spend the remaining time I had with my father. Family vacations can be stressful enough with everyone pushing their own agenda and not thinking about anyone else and what they would like to do. Even eating out can be stressful when no one can agree on where and what to eat.

We need to stop and think about our poor parents who work hard to come up with the money for the vacation and that what they are really looking for is just some appreciation and much needed rest, because after all they are on vacation too. So one of the main things I have learned is to try to back off a little on trying to get my own way and give into what others, especially my parents really want from a vacation.

Hilton Head turns out to be a great place to just relax, renew your mind, renew your relationships, and that is exactly what family vacations are really about anyway… FAMILY.
