Dinosaurs - My Family Travels

My name is Margaret Ellen Ortlieb and I’ve never actually traveled outside of my state. Truthfully, I haven’t ‘traveled’ at all. But, on May 22, 2007 I took a journey, or a trip as some may like to call it.

It all took place in my own backyard. It was a bright sunny day and I had decided to sleep in. When I woke up I looked at the clock and it was 12:30pm.

I was quite hungry so I walked downstairs and got a bowl of cereal. Captain Crunch to be exact. This is when my journey began.

I opened up the box, and inside instead of finding delicious sugary covered cereal pieces I found something shiny and gold. It appeared as if it was a key. But what did this key belong to? I thought it might belong to my shed so I went to my backyard.

I put the key into the lock and turned it. The door didn’t open, but I heard a noise. It was coming from behind the shed.

When I looked to see what was making that noise I was amazed at what I saw before me. It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple people-eater. I screamed.

Ahhhh! The creature turned to me and said, ‘Don’t be afraid, come on, hop on my back and I’ll take you for a ride.’ I wasn’t sure what to do, so I hopped on. He took me back in time. We traveled to the times of the dinosaurs.

I’ll never forget what I saw. Instead of huge carnivorous beasts, I saw medium-sized gentle beings. They were eating grass and seeds and sharing their drinking water with all the animals of the land.

These ‘dinosaurs’ were not selfish, and they weren’t meat eaters. They were friendly vegetarians. My Dino 101 class had been wrong. What were they teaching me? In fact, it was an honors class at one of the top high schools in the state.

I came to realize that the teachers teaching me this stuff had no clue what they were actually teaching. Even though they were old enough to live when the dinosaurs lived, they didn’t actually know how the dinosaurs lived. I felt betrayed, but I was also excited.

I got back on the purple people-eater and we flew back to present time. I ran to school (even though it was a Saturday). I told my teacher what I had learned and she became very angry at me. In fact, she threatened me with a failing grade. I started screaming. Noooo! Nooooooo! You can’t do that!!!!!

Then I woke up. It was all a dream, a nightmare actually. It was horrible, but wonderful at the same time. That is the story of my journey. Thank you.
