Not too long ago, I took a wonderful trip to the place where children’s dreams come true – Disney World – this was during the “Year of A Million Dreams” no less. Well, count one of my dreams to that, and you have the “Year of A Million and One Dreams.”
During the weekend that I was staying on the resort, the Disney Channel Games, a sort of relay/obstacle race for stars on the Disney Channel, were taking place at the Wide World of Sports. It also turned out that I was staying in the same hotel as all of the stars.
The night before the closing concert, my friends and I decided to take a dip in the pool enclosed by the hotel and the accommodating wildlife that surrounded it. Rather late that night, some Disney Channel stars started to appear at the poolside. Of course, there were tons of other teenagers there pretending to have reservations at the same hotel, but they got sent back to their actual hotel. The biggest star to grace the pool with their presence that night was Joseph Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. The first thought that immediately popped into my head was, “That boy needs longer swim trunks.” My friends and I eventually made it over to the other side of the pool. But by the time we got there, Joe had been escorted to a secured jacuzzi because he was being mobbed by fans.
Soon after, an Australian by the name of Ozgur Akdeniz had come out of the secured area. Turns out, he is the older brother of the Disney Channel International Australian star Deniz Akdeniz. From Ozgur, we learned different terms for different words. For example, when he first saw a “yield” sign, he interpreted it as ducking down and looking out for a bullet. In Australia, they say “give way”. My friends and I were also humored with the fact that, while backpacking through Europe, Australians find it entertaining to tell everyone about “drop bears” which are a form of koala, but they attack you and eat your brains if you come near them. Of course, these animals don’t really exist; Australians just don’t want as many tourists as they’ve been getting.
The next day at the concert, two of my friends and I had field tickets which means that we got to hang out on the actual ground floor while other people had to sit in the actual stadium seats. We stood by the V.I.P. area and talked to some celebrities. During the concert, we had the pleasure of hearing two new Miley Cyrus songs and we had the exclusive debut of songs from the new Disney Channel original movie “Camp Rock” performed live by Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers.
From this trip, I’ve learned the inner workings of a television channel. Not only how the stars get along, but how to produce a supposedly “live” concert, how to stay secure from crazy fans, and how to not let fame get to your head. This will ultimately help me in the future because I plan on pursuing a career in acting. So not only was this trip a dream come true because I met a multitude of Disney Channel stars, but also because it was a lesson in disguise.
