My Trip to Washington D.C. - My Family Travels

This year I was able to have an amazing experience which I got to share with my friends from school. We had the opportunity to be in an organization called Close Up which is held in Washington D.C. This was by far a wonderful experience we got to encounter. It was the first time that many of us went out of state without our parents. My friends and I got to meet some amazing people and see many historical monuments.

On our trip we not only went with our school but we were able to meet our students from all over. We meet people from South and North Dakota, Minnesota, Palao Island, and American Samoa. My friends and I thought that maybe we would only be seeing these people every once an awhile but it ended up being that two people from a different school were going to be our roommates. That was a very exciting opportunity because we all got to share different things about what each of our states had and didn’t have. We learned so much about each other and laughed at how we thought each others accents were funny.

We got to see and here many different stories from both American Samoa and Palao Island students. American Samoa had performed for one of their famous dances that are given to show respect to the princess. The students from Palao Island had told us stories about their island and also brought some of their necklaces that they use and wear at their island. Seeing all these amazing students perform was very interesting to all the other students there. Aside from meeting these great people we also got to travel around Washington D.C. with them.

During our trip we were able to travel to different monuments with all the students. We had the chance to visit the Vietnam Memorial, the Japanese Memorial, Lincoln and Washington Memorial, many museums, and of course the famous White house. That is we only got to see the front of the White House. Before we had gone on this trip we were told that we had to actually do some work. At first we all thought it was going to be a drag and that it was going to make our trip a little on the boring side, but it ended actually giving us a brighter look on how exactly our government works and we learned how to debate properly which was extremely fun. Having the workshops on this trip made me realize that there is a lot more going on in our government and country that we don’t get to see or here about. It really made me want to stay in touch with what was really happening around me.

This experience definitely is something that will always stick with me and that I will never forget. I learned so much from seeing all the monuments and from the people I had simply been around for a whole week. In the future if any siblings or maybe even my children asked me if they should attend this trip I would say yes without any hesitation. Close Up definitely makes a big impact on your life and its something every child should have the opportunity to experience.
