Padre Partier | My Family Travels

This past summer, my dad and his partner took me and my cousin Mike to South Padre Island for one last family vacation before school started. Freddy (my dad’s partner) was so excited to take all of us on one of the many dolphin watches that are available to tourists. The original dolphin watch that we were going to go on was full so we were unable to attend it. Determined, Freddy found another one for us to go on. This dolphin watch was called Isla Tours and to be honest, it seemed as if he was the only one enthusiastic about going on the three hour boat ride. However, this specific boat ride was not just a dolphin watch, but a sunset and firework “cruise” as well (meaning it wasn’t just a quick ride out to see some dolphins).

When the sun finally sank below the ocean, the boat took on a total transformation. As my cousin and I sat on the top deck, bored out of our minds, watching all the tourists give their “oohs” and “ahhs”, the sound of progressive dance music grew louder. Not only that, but the disco balls that were hiding on a tall post above us began to light up and move.
The top deck of the boat quickly became a dance floor. With ditsy, half-drunk, middle aged women trying to relive their “glory days” dancing to songs they had never heard before. But of course, with my dad and Freddy always on the lookout for a good time, quickly popped open another cerveza and went to dancing like I imagined them to when they were about twenty years younger.
As Mike and I watched in horror and amusement, the beats grew louder and so did the crowd. The more drinks that they drank, the more my cousin and I laughed. However, my comedy was short lived when my father (always quick to embarrass me) told one of the women to dance with me.
As she led me to the middle of the boat’s dance floor, I could feel my face begin to blush. Here I was, in the middle of the ocean, 10:30 at night, dancing with drunken middle aged woman who probably had a son of her own that was around my age. However, with my dad and Freddy’s cheers of support, I danced the night away as my cousin Mike recorded it all on his phone.
The dolphins were splendid, the sunset was beautiful, and the fireworks were amazing. However, I will never forget dancing with my potential college roommate’s mother in the middle of the ocean, at night the weekend before my senior year began. It was a remarkably interesting and fun night, one that brought my summer to a freakishly happy end. I highly recommend this dolphin watch for anyone looking for a unique touristy fun filled night.
