The dictionary defines vacation as a freedom or release from duty, business, or activity. Key-word being FREEDOM! It is the seldom time of the year that we get to lounge, relax, and take our minds far away from all the stresses of everyday life. For my family we find our center of peace at the heart of Missouri, the Lake of the Ozarks.
Osage Beach, my home town, is one of the smaller towns in Missouri. Yet it remains a main tourist attraction spot because of its lakeside location. Along with other visitors, my family chose to reside at the Tan-Tar-A resort. Tan-Tar-A defines vacation by offering waterskiing, boat rental, parasailing, etc. They even house their own indoor water park, Timber-Falls, which is a great way to relax during some of the hottest days of summer. Timber-Falls, although great for other families, was not of my families’ interest. My sister Charla and I were looking to get a tan and soak up the sun in whatever ways possible. What better way than to rent a boat and hit the lake for waves of fun?
Boat rental was at easy access thanks to Tan-Tar-A. A quick trip down to the resorts boat deck was all the further we had to go for a fun day in the sun. Within a few minutes my parents, Keith and Kay, Charla, and I were loading up the boat with sunscreen, a cooler full of our favorite beverages, and of course we could not forget the water tube. Tubing has always been a fond memory for my family. It is a “hold on for your life” experience that I had looked forward to, therefore calling first dibs. After making several attempts to get on the oversized tube, I was settled, hands on the handles, ready for the ride! My dad always looks back for the thumbs up, signaling you are ready for the waves. The boat speeds off, breaking the water into two main waves behind the boat. When we were younger my mom taught us how to jump over the breaks with the tube, a skill that I will admit took time to master. If you have never experienced tubing, you can only imagine how hard holding your body weight up is while speeding along the lake. We spent several hours taking turns out on the tube, as well as just exploring the estimated 93 acres of the Lake of the Ozarks. Skin crisp from hours in the sun, the family headed back to the resort for some down time.
My parents are in love with the fact resting is aloud on vacation, unlike my sister and I who never want to stop. While mom and dad rest up in the room, we went shopping right there in our resort! Tan-Tar-A hosts its own shopping outlet to keep us teens busy until the whole family was ready for a night out in Osage Beach. Tattoo shops, ten cent ski-ball, go-cart racing, and sea food joints were everywhere along what tourist call “the strip”. Here we spent quality family fun time, relaxing and having fun by playing games, have family races on the go-carts, and listening to the easy going music of the night.
Our trip to the Lake of the Ozarks is something I will always look forward to with my family every summer. Hopefully it will not be as long of a trip for me within the next couple of years in the hopes of moving there after college, and residing lakeside as my parents did when I was younger.
