St. Augustine. My journey abroad to Europe began my novel, my junior summer I traveled to Spain and Italy. This was an experience that I only dreamed of having the opportunity to adventure due to my mother being a single mom and working three jobs, however, being the super woman mother she is along with a determined state of mind she found a way.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” –
My chapter began in Raleigh at RDU airport, my second week out of school for the summer. This was a day I never thought I would get to see, but if there’s a will there’s a way and we found that way. The plane ride was longer than ever but I conquered my fear of airplanes on the flight since September 11,2001 occurred. The first day of the trip we arrived in Madrid, Spain probably one of the busiest most commercialized cities in Spain that you could visit. The day was wonderful our tour guide picked our group up from the airport and the day began with touring the city and checking in at our not hotel but, hostel. The hostel that we resided in the first night was unlike anything I had ever been exposed too, they didn’t have wash-cloth’s, air-condition, televisions, dryer’s, a dinning room, alarm clocks, light switches, or lamps. These are the things that I take for granted everyday in my life and don’t even realize that I have them or use them. After the first night of staying there I began to appreciate America and the items that we use everyday without thinking about. I didn’t have to go to a third-world country to be grateful for what I have at home, but simply Europe, and most wouldn’t even think Europe was that different but in my eyes it was, and a I learned a life lesson. Every time I turn on light switch now or dry clothes I’m thankful that I have that to use. Spain was an incredible place to visit and I tried many different foods and ate at many tapa’s, which were different than what I was used too.
A week into the trip we went on a cruise to Italy, this was quite a surprise, it wasn’t planned in our trip nor did the tour guide know it was going to take place but because of plans changing a cruise was added in our trip that cruised from Barcelona, Spain to Rome, Italy. Once we arrived in Italy it was amazing, it is the prettiest place I have ever seen in my life especially the Island of Capri. The Island of Capri is a place I have always heard people talk about its beauty and it is truly a gorgeous place. While on the island I learned that the term “Capri pant’s” was originated by Jacqueline Kennedy when she was First Lady visiting Capri and returning to the United States with mid calf pants and named them Capri pant’s. Also in Rome I was able to tour the Vatican, The Holy City. The Vatican was breath taking especially to know that I was in the massive building where the Pope lived. My trip was complete to me after seeing these two places, and I would go back and continue to explore any day!
