Every summer the youth group from my church goes on a mission trip. Last summer, we went to St. Petersburg, FL. There we were privileged to work with a migrant workers ministry through TEAMeffort. The people in this ministry came from different cultures and were economically disadvantaged. They came to this ministry to get food and clothes for their families. Working alongside people of different cultures opened my eyes and made me realize that people learn in a multitude of ways and often have differing viewpoints on certain subjects.
When I was a sophomore, my English teacher taught me that everyone might not agree on the main idea of a book because it could mean something different to each reader. Growing up in a certain culture, one learns to look at things with viewpoints that go along with that person’s culture. When reading a book for a class, students in the class may have different outlooks on the book according to their life and background.
When I get to college I will take this trip and what I have learned from it with me. I will encourage study groups to allow students of differing cultures to talk about how they experienced the books they have read, the videos they have watched, or lectures they have heard in classes. This would help students realize that everyone has a different understanding of what they learned in a lesson. This message of understanding cultural differences will transfer into the business world. People will realize that not everything will be the way they desire it to be because their colleagues won’t always have the same viewpoint. They will learn to compromise and welcome differences of opinions. The promotion of diversity will hopefully lead to peace in the classroom and eventually in the workplace.
