Stonehenge: An Unexpected Paradise - My Family Travels

One of the world’s most famous unsolved mysteries is simply a bunch of big rocks. Yet I was lucky enough to see it: Stonehenge. While on a tour of seven countries with sights such as the Eiffel Tower, gondolas in Venice, and Big Ben, I was hardly concerned with a pile of stones. Salisbury, England was the last stop on our eighteen day EF Tours trip.

My first thought upon stepping off our bus was, “It’s not that big.” Of course, that could have been because we could only get so close. But what kind of person thinks that when seeing Stonehenge for the first time? I was apparently blind to the power it actually possessed. Little did I know, the stones had a plan to show me exactly what I was missing out on.

The walk around the stones took maybe ten minutes (pictures included). Before heading back to the museum however, I decided to take a silly picture. I passed my camera to a friend, faced Stonehenge, and settled down into a meditation pose. Thankfully, no other tourists were around. Yet it was because of the lack of people near me that I suddenly saw the stones for what they really were.

A peaceful feeling came over me as I sat in my pose. The background noise faded away completely until it was just me and a bunch of thousand year old rocks. I felt in tune with what could only be described as a spiritual force that surrounded the area. I had to wrench myself to a standing position. Otherwise, I would probably still be sitting there today.

Driving away, I kept my eyes on Stonehenge until it was a tiny dot in the distance. I came back to America with an inner peace, and an understanding of nature and its power to create beauty from something as simple as stone. While I may not understand all the strange things that have happened at Stonehenge, I do know that whatever powers exist there opened my eyes to something new and wonderful.
