Jamaica, Here We Come... - My Family Travels

Have you ever had problems at an airport that ended up making you run through the airport in order to catch your flight? Well, I have and so has my mom. In the fall of 2008, my mom and I traveled to Jamaica for a fun and relaxing getaway. The beginning of the trip didn’t go as planned because there were airport problems that made us arrive six hours later than we were supposed to arrive in Jamaica. There can be unlucky experiences when traveling, but there are ways of making those experiences fun and laughable.

My mom and I started our trip by getting up at 3:00 am to catch our flight in Madison, Wisconsin. When we arrived at the airport, we found out that our flight had been canceled because of mechanical problems. Luckily we got to the airport early because there were two seats left on another plane. We got on that plane, but we had to sit on it for about an hour because of a mechanical difficulty with that plane. When the plane finally took off and landed in Detroit, Michigan, we learned that we were late for our plane and it had already departed. So, we ran to a help desk to see if there was another flight that we could get on. By then, we didn’t think that we would make it to Jamaica that day. But, by a lucky chance, there was another flight that was already being loaded, so we had to run through the Detroit airport too. My mom and I made that flight and then we landed in Atlanta, Georgia. We were finally getting further south!

Once my mom and I got off the plane, we had a two hour layover, so we decided to get some food since it had been awhile since we last ate and we were starving. We didn’t have to rush to our next flight when we were done eating, so we looked around the Atlanta airport’s little shops for something to do. It was really great that we didn’t have to run through this airport and we got to look around for awhile.

Our last layover was in Miami, Florida. By then we were getting tired out and there wasn’t much to do in the terminal we were in, so we just sat and waited for our flight to Jamaica. It was about 8:00 pm when we finally arrived in Jamaica and we couldn’t wait to get to our hotel to eat and sleep. We were so glad to be there though that it didn’t matter that much as to what had happened earlier in the day.

Traveling can’t always be lucky and easy, but there are ways to make those less unfortunate experiences more positive and even laughable. My trip to Jamaica didn’t start out as planned, but my mom and I ended up making all of our airport troubles into a funny story to tell friends and family. There was no way that we were going to let our airport experience trouble us, and the rest of our trip was amazing with no troubles on the way home.
