At the time my parents got divorced, I was a freshman in high school in Iowa. My mother decided to take me to Las Vegas, Nevada and start a new life away from my father. My mother and I packed up all of our belongings and stored it in a moving truck and started our journey down to the southwest. We passed through multiple states, taking a rest ever 6 hours or so to use the restroom or eat something. The moving truck, which I was sitting up front with my mother, had no air conditioning and it was over 100 degrees outside. I knew that if we kept driving, we would take less time to get to our destination and the sooner it will be until we had some cool air hit our exhausted bodies. Every state we drove through, the scenery was changing and new obstacles got in our way. Once we made it past the Colorado border, we saw mountains that were soon to be our next adventure. Our truck was pushing itself all the way up the mountain one mile at a time and suddenly we saw the top. my mother and I were excited because we knew that the trip down will use a minimal amount of gas. After we passed that treacherous formation of land, it was a straight shot to Las Vegas. We had to stop once more to rest before the sun rose the next day. My mother woke me up and said, “Six more hours and we will be home.” I was excited and we were on the road again. Once we crossed the Nevada border, there was nothing to see but cacti and dirt all around the highway. Every once in a while I saw some jack rabbits but nothing fascinating. The next sign we saw was, “Las Vegas, Next 6 Exits.” I was excited and we were so close to our new home and our new lives. I called my cousin, whom I am living with now at our house, and he gave us directions to where our new life will begin. we arrived our our house about mid day and ran inside to an air conditioned room and we finally relaxed knowing that our journey was finished but another chapter in our lives had begun.
