My name is Josiah Carter and my mom is from Costa Rica. Every year, my grandparents on my mom’s side go to visit Costa Rica and my aunt and uncle go with them every other year. Last year, in August, my older sister, and younger brother and I went to Costa Rica with my grandparents, aunt and uncle and cousin.
This trip was the first time I had ever been out of the country and it was a great experience! We stayed at my grandparents’ house that they own in Limón, Costa Rica. It was really neat to see and stay in the house that my mom had lived in for all of her childhood. We visited my mom’s elementary school, her junior high school, her church and a number of beaches that she used to go to. Some of the beaches we swam in were Playa Bonita, (Pretty Beach), Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and a few others. The beaches in Costa Rica are very nice! They aren’t cold like the ones in California. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see many of the famous landmarks that Costa Rica is known for besides the beaches because my aunt wanted to relax more than going sightseeing. The markets and souvenier shops were also a fun place to go there are so many cool clothing items and trinkets to buy for yourself or loved ones.
The food was another really great thing about Costa Rica! Anyone who knows me knows that I love food and will eat pretty much anything and everything! So it was really fun to try all the new and unique foods. There are a few Costa Rican meals that my mom makes for us such as Pataconas and Black beans and rice but in Costa Rica, it was interesting to see that the people eat that just about everyday along with other food.
The last, but not leat, thing that I will mention are the animals. There were many indigenous creatures that we saw from crabs to monkeys. It was awesome to see these animals in their natural habitat rather than in the zoo.
Overall this trip was very fun and relaxing. One of the main things I learned from this experience is to be thankful for what we have. Some of the houses in Costa Rica are really small and old and the overall community just isn’t that great, especially in poorer cities like Limon. Costa Rica is a very beautiful and cultural country, I would highly recommend it as a vacations spot for anyone.
