I have been on some amazing vacations. I have visited tropical worlds and seen beauty beyond imagination, but still, my favorite place in the whole world is Door County, Wisconsin. My Aunty Donna has a lake house in Sturgeon Bay and for years my whole extended family spends two weeks of the summer there for uninterrupted bonding with nature and each other. The house is small and simple and the whole experience is far from glamorous, but it is uncomplicated and good.
I have a big, Italian family and my cousins and aunts and uncles are as close as siblings and parents. As we get older and our lives get busier finding time to spend together becomes harder and harder. Door County lets us sit and talk and swim and fish and cook without the pressures of everyday life that can often overwhelm us. Our weeks in Wisconsin allow is to reconnect and catch up. Most of my favorite memories involve my cousins and I doing something silly in Wisconsin. We’ve made up 100s of games to play around the house and yard. Every moment that passes is a fun one.
On top of the pure family bonding time the scenery is beautiful. The sunsets look like they were literally painted by a master artist. At night, you can see every star and even locate constellations. Waking up to waves crashing into the rocks and breathing the clean air is the most peaceful experience. Even the storms are beautiful. I could watch lighting light up the lake for hours.
Door County may be simple and near home, but there is no where I would rather be. Family, time, freedom and peace: what more could anyone ask for?
