Trek for Knowledge, 2009 - My Family Travels

The best experience of my life was my trip to the village of San Pedro, Nicaragua. I went to Nicaragua in February of 2009 for 14 days with BuildOn an organization at my school. BuildOn is a non-profit organization that raises money to build schools in third world countries. We raise money through the school year and two people are chosen from several different schools in the metro Detroit area to go and help build a school in a third world country. While in Nicaragua We lived in the village with a host family. We brought our own food and we pumped are own water. There was a group of about 15 students and we worked every day on the school in shifts with the village people. While one shift was working the other was doing some kind of cultural activity. We climbed mountains to pick coffee and saw the whole process of coffee making. We also meet with the local midwife and the local carpenter. We saw a farm and I  got a chance to milk a cow.

The whole experience was amazing. I have a whole new outlook on things, especially on little things like electricity, water and a bathroom. I’ve learned that I take the little things for granted and that I need to be more appreciative of everything. I am now more than ever a lot more grateful for an opportunity to be able to go to school. The children of San Pedro loved school they were so excited about us building them a new school, they would run to school every day. Children here in American can’t wait till the school day ends, but the children of Nicaragua know how important education is and where it can take them.  They taught me how to appreciative every moment of my life and to just live in the now. They don’t worry about tomorrow they just take life one day at a time.
I would wake every morning to the sounds of chickens and pigs and when I would go outside to brush my teeth I would just marvel over how beautiful the mountains were and how the sun just slowly raised over the mountains. I would love to wake up every day to such a beautiful view. Nicaragua is a wonderful and beautiful beyond words country and I will never forget the people in San Pedro. They will be forever be engraved in my heart for they have taught me so much.
