I have never imagined that my softball career would ever bring me to Italy.  Being invited to play in Italy was more than a dream come true.  I will always remember being a part of America’s Team. Although I anticipated the softball, I never planned on meeting amazing people and visiting incredible places that would make the whole trip complete.

Italy was a place only anticipated in my imagination before that summer.  Roma, Italia was pure beauty.  The colors that surrounded me were remarkable; scarlets, golds, indigos and jades flocked the streets and painted on my white canvas.  The shops and houses that lined the streets thrived with these colors and revived its culture.  The architecture in the streets was so detailed that it stood out compared to anything that I had ever seen before.  The window gardens and porches that were seen from below added to the culture shock that I was already experiencing.

Many of my cherished memories occurred on Lago Maggiore.  I could have stayed there forever.  The mountains sprouted in the distance.  The sun glistening off of the turquoise sea was irresistible.  Waves were sent rushing to the shore while the boats were parked in its waters.  The glossy lake was the most beautiful lake I had ever seen.  It was as if the water called my name and summoned me to its shore.

Lago Maggiore wasn’t the only wonder that I encountered while in Italy.  Rome was the most amazing city I have ever been in my entire life.  History and culture thrive in its streets.  The sculptures and artistic masterpieces that lined the roads aided in the cultural precedence of the Italians.  The cracks and holes that survive in the Coliseum provide new depths of insight to the Italian background.  The floors and structures were crumbling with age, yet standing as if they would last forever.  The Coliseum proved to me that there are places in the world that challenge the test of time.  Walking through the history itself made me feel as if I were part of it.

Our trip finally took us to the Trevi Fountain.  Nine at night we approached the huge, beautiful fountain ready to make our memories last forever.  At first glance, the Trevi caught our eyes.  The water glistened even at night, and the sculptured fountain featured many figures and demonstrated the beauty of Italy in a single location.  The legend says, that tossing a coin into the fountain will lead to your return to Rome again some time in your future, and this was something that I surely took part in.  As my hand approached my shoulder, my eyes closed tighter and tighter as I wished to come back to this beautiful city again later in my life.

I never really considered myself to be a “people person,” but when I was in Italy I experienced a whole new type of community.  These people opened their arms to you, were kind, and surprisingly generous to us.  They made me realize that there is courtesy in this world and that people really do care about one another.  Due to the genuine people that I had the pleasure of meeting, I now have a greater understanding of the characteristics of generosity and kindness that I wish to display to others.  This trip to Italy truly left its footprint on my heart and surrounded me with life lessons and Italian education that will remain with me forever.
