Do you like being lied to? I hear that most people don't, but let me tell you a little story about how a little lie turned into a wonderful thing…..
It happened when I was about 10 or so. My family travels down to Florida to visit my grandparents who live in Ft. Myers, and we stay for about 6 weeks or so at a time. But anyway, one morning, Grandma comes into my room and tells me, and my brothers,
“UP AND ADAM! Eat breakfast and get dressed! You're going out this morning!”
so I reply, “Where are we going?”
Grandma: “On an all-day boat tour”
Me, I'm not too fond of boat tours because in Florida, it gets really hot out there in the sun, and the seats burn my legs. When I heard this, my response was, “Forget that! I'm going back to sleep!”
“NO! YOU'RE GOING!”
Of course, I was upset because it was still dark outside, which meant it had to be about 5:30 or 6:00 AM, and I just wanted to sleep. I got dressed, at some cereal, brushed my teeth, and got ready to head out to this “all-day boat tour”. “Happy” was an overstatement.
Grandpa became our chaperone to me & my brothers, Jonathan and Phillip. I fell asleep in the car, since it was taking a long time, and when I woke up, got out of the car, and started walking around to stretch, I saw these huge gates. They were decorated, and had these words hanging high above my head that read, “Magic Kingdom”. It was then that I realized, and thought to myself, 'this isn't a swamp. This is not an all-day boat tour at all! Magic Kingdom…..? Where are we?' A bit after entering this splendid place where dreams supposedly come true, I realized I was setting foot in Disney World!
All day long, the 4 of us rode all sorts of rides, and I even went on roller coasters, which I normally DO NOT enjoy. Space Mountain was my favorite, even though it spun in all directions, and was pitch black, except for the lights that were meant to resemble stars in space. We rode that one at least 3 times. We stopped and got hotdogs for lunch, Surge soda slushies, and we just enjoyed the time together. The only thing that I disliked about this amazing trip was that the lines were really long, and sometimes we had to wait over half an hour for a single turn on a ride. Sometimes, Grandpa would just get the tickets for a ride in advance, since there's little dispensers outside of some of the rides, and then we'd just hop in line when they were short. I even started driving since one of the rides was like a go-cart or race car, and I learned that if you turn the wheel a little bit, it will turn, so you don't have to turn it ALL the way. Otherwise, it hits the rail underneath the car…
This was one of the best days of my life, and to this day, it's the only time I've ever been to Magic Kingdom. I loved spending time with my family, and getting out of the house to go on an adventure. This time, I suppose I can forgive Grandma for lying to me, since she was trying to surprise me. It makes me more suspicious when I visit my grandparents now, but, maybe I'll just trust them from now on…..=]
