Student Council Summer Workshop - My Family Travels
IMG_0184

One week ago, I went on a trip to San Marcos that impacted my life in many different ways. As an officer in Student Council, I with other six officers, got to go to a summer leadership workshop for Student Council at Texas State University. This trip was the first one that our school had ever made for Student Council purposes  therefore, all of us were very excited. We were not the only school there, there were over twenty different schools from all over Texas and over three hundred students. The workshop was for five days therefore we had to stay at the dorms of the university but they  were not what I expected since there was no T.V. nor Wi-Fi in my room but I was able to survive for the five days.We were also told to expect to room with someone else that was not from the same school and too be honest I was a lit of bit scared. When I met my roommate, the fear went away cause she was really cool and I got along with her really well. It even turned out that she was the cousin of a friend of mine from school so I was excited because i made a new friend. The first day of  the workshop, all of us got divided into twelve groups that were our families for the rest of the workshop. In my family, I was with twenty four students that I had never seen before but one of the purposes of the workshop was to meet new people. We did lots of activities within our family that helped us to know each other better and by the end of the workshop we had created a strong friendship with each other. We even have our own group on Facebook to never lose contact with each other. Throughout the whole workshop we were busy doing activities, creating dances and skits, learning, and of course having fun. Our first activity we had to do was create a 50's dance and perform in front of everybody. This helped us a lot because everybody worked together and we all learned what team work was all about. Even though we sometimes had some disagreements with each other we were able to put our differences aside to have a successful dance performance.  We also created a skit that was about domestic violence. We talked about how domestic violence affected teenagers in school and we came up with a quote to stop it; the quote was "love is respect". The video can be seen in YouTube as the  name Group D "Love is respect".Besides teamwork, I learned that we are the leaders of the school and what leadership truly is about. I learned what my job as a treasurer was and the process of how student council meetings should be run. Going to the workshop also gave us ideas for our school. We got ideas on how to increase school spirit, on how to fundraise for our club and for different organizations all around the world, on community projects, and  on school activities. Without a doubt, this trip made a huge impact in my life. I made new friends, I learned team work, I improved my leadership skills, I got to experience life in college, and I learned lots of things that would make me a better person. I am glad that i went on this trip and I would never forget it.
