Life Under the Big Sky - Bozeman, Montana - My Family Travels
deer

Being a girl from Montana, it’s not uncommon for me to be asked by tourists if I ride a horse to school or if I own a billion pairs of cowboy boots. However, my all-time favorite question is “So do you like it here?” Do I like it here! That’s like asking a fish if it likes water or asking a horse if it likes hay! Bozeman, and Montana as a whole, is truly “The Last Best Place”.

Growing up, I never thought about it much, but now that I’m older, I truly realize how lucky I am to live in such an amazing environment. Although it’s not usually on most people’s lists for “Places to Travel to” I cannot express how badly I think Bozeman deserves to make the cut. Preserved places like America’s first national park, Yellowstone National Park, are hard to find in the world of today, and with it basically in the backyard of Bozeman, everyone should be able to experience this natural wonder. Yellowstone is home to Old Faithful (as well as the majority of the world’s geysers), grizzly bears, elk, bison, wolves, hot springs, fumaroles, and mud pots. In the heart of Bozeman is the Museum of the Rockies, a must see for traveling tourists. It is the home to one of the largest and most important dinosaur collections in the world with a skeleton of the T-Rex right at the entrance! Next to the museum is a living history farm that lets visitors experience what life was like for a true homesteader. Also, in the heart of Bozeman, is historic downtown, with some buildings dating back to the 1880’s. Along with the preserved architecture, many cultural events take place downtown including Music on Main, where local bands and musicians gather for a night of music, entertainment and food.

My favorite part about Montana is the food. For those travelers who are food junkies and love to try new things, a bison burger should be on your list to sample (or devour). I would also recommend tourists head on over to Bozeman Blends (the best smoothie place in town), Pickle Barrel (home to the best soups, sandwiches, and ice cream) and of course Ted’s (which has the best bison burgers in the whole west). If you are the adventurous type and would like to try snowboarding or downhill skiing, Bozeman has top-notch skiing, including Bridger Bowl and Big Sky. Or if you are the type of traveler that just likes to relax and enjoy the scenery, Bozeman can serve that purpose too.

Living here for my whole life, I cannot imagine there being a more pure and amazing place.  It’s not like other places, with pollution and crime, it’s nature and excitement all in one. I’ve traveled to all sorts of places near and far and I can truly say there is no place like Montana. I’ve had relatives come to visit us here who have been to all corners of the earth and they still say that Montana is one of the most amazing places they have ever seen. Whether the traveler loves adventure and excitement or just experiencing the natural wonders, Bozeman could not be a better destination. People can think that we all ride horses and own cowboy boots or whatever they want, but until they see what a beautiful place we live in, they won’t understand what they are missing in Bozeman, Montana.

Reading Fran Falkin’s insights took me back to my first trip with Whiskers, my feline companion. The chaos of ensuring he was comfortable amidst the hustle of the airport was a lesson in patience. Had I come across these invaluable tips earlier, our journey would’ve been as smooth as a calm sea.

I read your article on the Sheep of Sun Valley and I found it very fascinating and enjoyable. You have given a detailed and colorful account of your experience at the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which celebrates the history and culture of sheepherding in Idaho. I think your article is a great way to introduce this unique and fun event to other travelers and families who are looking for a different and memorable adventure.
