Saint George, Utah is popular for vacations. Its excellent winter weather attracts snow birds. Then there are many sites to see and explore. For example; golf courses, Zions, and many other scenic spots. To me, however, the most profound things in Saint George is its historic buildings and Dixie Rock.
There are many buildings in the area, but my favorite is the tabernacle. The building was built by pioneers in 1871 to be used as a meetinghouse. Today, the tabernacle’s woodwork and historic charm makes it a wonderful place to visit. Historic buildings are also a good way to connect to history. Many have a story behind them. One example is the tabernacle’s spiral staircase. From the ground, the staircase appears to an ordinary staircase. However, the stairs go above the gallery, with additional stairs leading down. This seems strange. However, Miles Romney, the architect for the building, wanted the stairs to have two complete spirals. Unfortunately, this made the gallery too high up. By this point, the stairs could not be changed without creating new problems. In the end, the gallery was lowered and the stairs were built down to the gallery. Another story is the tabernacle’s clock. It was built so that Saint George would have a community clock. It was put there to give everyone a way to set their own clocks. In conclusion, everything in the building has a story, from its stairs to its clock. It is doubtful anyone could learn them all from one visit.
Another historic building is Brigham Young’s summer home. This spot is fun because it allows people a peek into the past. Everything from the wood floor to the fireplace gives us an idea of how places used to look. The floor’s nails are the original nails used in the building. Then the fireplace looks like it is marble, however it was painted that way. This allows people to see a lost art. The Brigham Young home in Saint George has many features that let people get a fill of what houses were like in pioneer times. This building is truly remarkable.
Saint George has more than just historic buildings. There are also fun hiking spots. My favorite place to visit is Dixie Rock. Here there are many rocks to explore. There is a bridge that leads right above the rock formation that has Dixie written on it. Close by is two huge cliffs right next to each other. Here people like to climb in between to reach the top. It is possible to go around but it is a whole different experience walking between them to rocks that are like stairs until you reach the top. There is so much to see, that it takes hours to see it all.
In conclusion, there are many things to see in Saint George. The best spots to me are its historic buildings and Dixie rock. It is easy to have so much fun that you lose track of time. The best part is that all of these places are free to visit.
