If it weren’t for the automated elevators I would have pressed every single enticing button, just to see every magical floor. It took three elevators just to get to the observatory, not that I minded. I wanted to study every button, wall, door, and inch of the floor. I was hypnotized by New York. The captivating lights and the fast pace drew me in, but something about this place made it all feel so complete. I felt the ring of the last elevator in my bones. The ring was the final cue for my hypnotized body to fall completely in love with the city. I was in the one building that the whole world talked about. The one building that the whole world has seen at least a picture of. The Empire State building was like a dream.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, my speechless body was on autopilot. My mind was in the clouds (literally). I could only think of how captivating the view was. My body was in a trance, controlled only by the mesmerizing city. Looking out at the city was the best part of trip. It completed the whole experience. It connected everything. I could see where I was the day before, where I was going the next day, and everything in between.
Everything had its own story. From the buildings to the water to the streets, everything contained life, and each life contained a story. These stories are why New York is what it is. I was so glad I could explore the cover to this book of stories. That’s what the empire state view is. It’s the cover page for all of New York. New York was summarized in that one perspective.
I was astonished at how a city so big could become so small at that moment. The city was finally small enough for me to begin to take in all it had to offer. I felt unworthy to stand there and see such a view, but I never wanted to say goodbye. Not even the ice cold wind stinging against my face could force me back inside.
However, it was my mother who had to physically pull me from the scene. I was annoyed that we had to leave, but I knew that view would stay with me forever. It would be an itch that would only find relief through another visit, or perhaps a lifetime in its presence.
