The first thing that pops in a person’s head when they think of New York is automatically related to the city. I grew up on Long Island so the first thing that pops into my head when I think of New York is home. New York is not the rude state as many think it is. There are beautiful people and beautiful landscape too.
Living in Long Island all my life, I have been to many places. Out of all the places to go, my favorite spot is this park that is less than a ten-minute drive from my house. The park is called Heckscher State Park and the place is beautiful. Many days my mother and I go running and we see many familiar faces and some not so familiar. The atmosphere at the park is so friendly and peaceful, strangers are saying good morning to others, there are people admiring the ocean, others gazing at the wild life. If people stopped thinking of New York as only a city, they could see the beauty the state actually has.
My family from Georgia came to visit us last year and the first thing they wanted to do is go to the city, of course what kind if tourist wouldn’t want to visit the city. While in the city they asked my siblings and I what we do for fun, we said that in the summer we like to grab a Ralph’s Italian Ices then go to a beach nearby and just watch the sun set while eating our ices. They said they could never do that because they don’t have nearby beaches, the local beach is several hours away.
They made me realize how lucky I am to be able to just go to a nearby beach and sit in the sand. I love having a beach nearby because sometimes it is nice after stressing out to be able to go to a nearby beach and just relax, take a deep breath, and just let all the stress dissipate. Other times I like to jump and play near the water with my younger cousins. It is nice to be able to forget about all worries and spend time with family.
New York is not all about the fast paced life. Here on the island, we get to have peaceful moments that bring us back to realizing that life is not all about living fast paced at a boring nine to five job. There are places that have space to run free and enjoy one’s self, not only a cluttered city. To be honest, I could never call anywhere else home, because to me living in Long Island in New York is the best place to call home.
