The Chumash Indians were the earliest inhabitants of the area and originally called the valley Ojai after their indigenous word for “moon.” If going on a hike through ‘White Rocks,’ there is evidence still of their culture through grinding holes on the surfaces of flat rocks and cave paintings that dwell on the walls of crevasses still telling their story. You can even visit their old ritual sites, and if you’re lucky you might even find an arrowhead made from obsidian from the Chumash.
