Holiday Travel Plans Holding Strong Says New Survey - My Family Travels

Surprise! Despite Biblical plagues swirling around the globe, families are holding strong to holiday travel plans. More than three quarters of residents recently surveyed in Spain and Italy intend to travel this holiday season. Americans, planning holiday travel at 68%, are in third place among countries surveyed.

Families want to travel this holiday season to be with loved ones they haven’t seen.

Domestic Travel Dominates Holiday Travel Plans

The first International Vacation Confidence Index from Allianz Partners surveyed 9,000 people in Europe and the US from Nov. 2-Nov. 9, 2021. (Since the Omicron variant was not announced by WHO until Nov. 24, some experts believe family travelers’ confidence may wane.)

While the survey found a clear intention among families to travel somewhere this winter, holiday travel plans indicate strong domestic demand. The surveyed countries with the lowest rates of foreign travel plans are France (15%) and the US (18%).

It was Sir Winston Churchill who said, “it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Now more than a quarter of British families, perhaps tired of their small island nation, will travel abroad. While 27% of the Dutch interviewed found winter vacations ‘not at all important’ — the Dutch, along with the Swiss, have the highest rate of foreign holiday travel plans this winter.

Allianz Partners Vacation Confidence Index

Despite the world’s problems, families are eager to enjoy holiday travel plans, at home or abroad.

The survey was conducted by Allianz Partners, a leading consumer specialty insurance and assistance company, in conjunction with OpinionWay. Most readers know them for the Allianz Travel-branded travel protection plans that serve millions of customers each year.

Those traveling domestically or internationally for holiday festivals, lights displays and family visits don’t always buy travel insurance. Allianz found that for a majority of respondents, the combination of Covid-19 vaccination and flexible travel arrangements offered sufficient mitigation against the risk of losing their travel investment.

Yet, Britons (55% vaccination rate) are also most likely to purchase an insurance policy (39%) followed by the Dutch (30%) and Spaniards (25%).

Winter Getaways A Top Priority As Christmas Markets Close

Dreseden Christmas Market
Dresden typically boasts one of the most beautiful Christmas Markets in Germany, seen on a Croisieurope cruise along the Elbe River.

We were surprised by travelers’ resilience despite strict lockdowns in their home countries and the cancellation of public events such as Europe’s top Christmas markets.

Austria, for example, is currently under lockdown restrictions until Dec. 13, 2021. That means the beloved Weihnachtsmarkts in major cities had to close in the middle of the holiday shopping season. Yet six in 10 Austrians will follow through on holiday travel plans this winter, with one in four planning to make a trip abroad.

Health and Finances Worry Travelers’ Holiday Travel Plans

Surprisingly, only 25% of Austrians cited concerns around the ongoing pandemic as a reason for not making holiday travel plans.

The survey asked respondents to identify their major reasons not to travel. The three top reasons for family travelers are winter vacation not being important, wanting to save money, and worry over the pandemic.

In Germany, concern about the ongoing health crisis is the main reason for not planning a holiday this winter (30%) compared with just 13% of French respondents. The health crisis is also a key consideration for Britons, with 27% citing it as a travel deterrent.

Meanwhile, saving money is the top reason not to travel for Americans (23%).

“Understanding what factors influence individual travel decisions is vital for tourism planning,” says Joe Mason, Chief Marketing Officer – Travel, at Allianz Partners. “In these uncertain times, it enables Allianz Partners to respond to changing consumer needs and preferences with travel protection solutions aimed at boosting traveler confidence into the future.”

Our take: Whether you’re just insuring airlines tickets to Grandma’s house or that fancy Airbnb villa rental you booked, family travel insurance is the best gift you can give yourselves this season.

I had the chance to experience Denmark during the Christmas season, and it’s something I’ll always hold close to my heart. Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen felt like stepping into a storybook. The way the entire park was dressed in soft, glowing lights, handmade decorations, and the comforting scent of mulled wine in the air made every moment feel special.

There’s a unique warmth about this place that isn’t just from the cocoa or winter drinks, but from the people, the laughter, and the little traditions scattered around every corner. Watching families gather, children’s faces light up at the sight of the reindeer, and the simple joy of wandering through beautifully decorated stalls reminded me how lovely the holiday season can be.

It’s not just about the decorations or the rides — it’s the feeling of togetherness, the calm, and the way time seems to slow down so you can really take in the small, meaningful moments. I left with a heart full of good memories and a deep appreciation for the charm and kindness of Danish traditions.

If you ever get the chance to visit, I promise it’s a place that will stay with you long after you’ve left.

  • Thank you for such praise, I am glad I could present the material in a way that made you want to see and experience St. Augustine’s Black history for yourself.

Of course, this beach town has lots more to offer but if you are willing to walk the lanes and dig a little bit, the history of the first Blacks and how much they contributed to protecting the colony is fascinating.

Hope you get there and enjoy your trip.

Great content for cruise lovers !! One of the most advantage of cruising is you do not have to pick your luggages every day , and every day you discover a new country. Although one day is not enough to see everything it gives an idea about a country ! With my experience since 2007, 99,9% of my guest said that Kusadasi/Turkey is their favorite port among all the other ports. Because we have a lot of options for every traveler. The most popular places , if your ship is docking at Kusadasi, is Ephesus ancient city which is only 25 min. drive away. Ephesus was the 4th largest ancient city of the world in 2 c AD.Most of the ruins are reconstructed and gives an idea about Roman’ glorious times. If you ever visit Ephesus, I suggest you to see Terrace Houses , where the rich were living and houses are decorated with beautiful mosaics and frescoes from 3rd c AD.If you want to add a spiritual break , thats House of Virgin Mary is there. It is believed that she was taken by St. John the apostle to there.Another place you must see Ephesus Museum.. Forget all that boring museums you have seen . While guiding , I explain the most interesting artifacts , including original staue of Artemis. BTW. did you know that one of seven wonders of ancient world was located there? Well… not so much left , but it is still worth to be seen. If you ever visit Kusadasi, and want to have private tour, please feel free to contact with me ! I am very happy to answer your questions and customize your trip to Ephesus. Please visit my website, not only for Ephesus trip but also to get an idea about my beloved country Turkey/Turkiye. You can see different types of tours that I organize. Archaeological , culinary or lets customize your tour to Turkey together!! luxurytoursofturkey.com/
