Every year my family and I always go visit our relatives in sweet home Alabama. We live in Colorado which is thousands of miles away. I never get tired though of the long exhausting hours in the van with everyone warm and content as we take that road trip or the surprised expression on my grandmothers face when we ring on her doorbell, unexpectedly. Last August however of 2008 has had to be the best vacation and family trip I have ever went on. It was adventurous and exciting and was all because of my seven year old brother! My brother Dante unfortunately is diagnosed with sickle cell, a genetic disorder that takes place on the eleventh chromosome. When the mother and the father have the carrier, which is the trait for sickle cell, it produces sickle cells, disfigured blood cells that effect the rest of the healthy blood cells in the blood stream. My brother has to receive monthly transfusions, new healthy blood, to keep the good cells in his body that are whole flowing. He also has to be on oxygen to regulate his breathing. It’s not as bad as it sounds, he’s a healthy little boy.
A nation wide sponser called Make A Wish Foundation granted Dante a wish because of his illness. Dante’s wish was to go on a Disney Cruise. Make a wish foundation started saving up the money to make his wish come true just by fundraising. They were successful and in August 2008, my family and I were picked up by a black stretched limo. Enjoying the lights, music and free soda in the limo didn’t last long though. The limo driver helped us with our luggages and bid farewell. We flew United airlines and it was a restless journey to Florida. Almost three hours later we were at the hotel, it was late so we all went straight to bed. When the morning sun rose, so did we. Thiry minues later we were ready and headed downstairs. A Disney Line bus was a pretty sky blue color, seated around ninety people and even had multiple televisions hanging down from the ceiling of the bus. They showed Disney characters giving information about the ship and Castaway Key,disney’s own private island! We arrived at port in an hour where we got on. For the first three nights we toured the ship, ate, ate and ate and enjoyed Disney performances in the theatre. The interior of the ship and design plus the artistry was indescribeable. That Saturday we arrived at Castaway Key and had a ball. The ocean, the food and the people were jaut amazing.
The day we arrived at the Bahamas was a day I’ll never forget. There’s nothing like coming face to face with new culture, surroundings and people. Just when I thought I’ve seen the most beautiful ocean ever, we arrive at the Bahamas!I mean the ocean just went on and on, ther was no ending. The only reassurance that the ocean eventually ends was indicated by the glistening sun casting just above it. It was just a radiant sight. At that moment I looked at my brother in the water with my mother. There’s nothing like the love of a family. That trip was a blessing and I was just so blessed to be apart of my brothers wish. I will forever remember it and be grateful forever to have a brother as amazing as Dante. No matter what he has to go through, his family will be there for him.
