My Place in the Modeling World - My Family Travels

Ever since I was twelve years old I have had the amazing opportunity to model.  I started with an agency in Boise, Idaho called Metcalf Modeling & Talent, and went to a competition in Los Angeles called IMTA.  In this competition I competed in four different categories.  This included jeans, swimwear, runway and fashion print, and commercial.  I was lucky enough to sweep all of the categories in my age group and was even titled “Young Miss Model of the Year”.

Being in Los Angeles was only the start of my exciting experiences in the modeling world.  At IMTA I got scouted for Ford Models and I went back and forth from my home in Idaho, to Los Angeles for jobs and photo shoots.  I had great experiences in Los Angeles, and was able to spend time with my relatives that live in Southern California.  After being with Ford for over a year, I decided that it was time to broaden my horizons, and off to New York City I went!

I signed with an agency in New York called Vision Model Management.  Through them I was able to get a taste of the high fashion world.  I was in multiple runway shows, which I found I had a talent for, and runway soon became my favorite part of modeling.  New York has so many opportunities and fun things to do.  It really is the city that never sleeps!  I have met so many interesting and talented people in the modeling world, and I have learned so many things about myself.  I used to be painfully shy and modeling has brought me out of my shell and given me the confidence to strive for my goals.  The modeling world has such a different variety of people and personalities.  It has given me the skills to work well with people, even on twelve hour days with difficult deadlines and time restrictions.

I was also lucky enough to be in a national Aveda Skincare Campaign.  It was mind boggling to walk into an Aveda salon and see a giant poster of my face.  I felt beside myself and couldn’t believe it was actually me.   I was in a few magazines as well, such as Teen Vogue, Italian Vogue, German Vogue, and various European magazines.

You might ask, “Why would a model need to apply for scholarships?” and, “Wouldn’t she be rich?”  Unfortunately, I have gotten so busy with school, sports, working, and getting ready for college, that I haven’t had any time or money to pay for expensive trips to New York.  The truth of the matter is that I was very young and just barely getting experience in the modeling world.  Many clients won’t hire such young models for fear that they aren’t experienced enough to get the job done as fast as possible.  When you are just starting out, the jobs you get barely pay for your expense to get there.  That is why modeling is so difficult to make a career out of.

I hope I can go back to modeling after I graduate college, but if not, I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had and I will never forget the people that supported me along the way.  They got me through the tough times and helped me to gain confidence in my abilities.  I would love to travel the world and experience the cultures of different countries.  Modeling has given me a taste of different cultures and I can’t wait to experience more!
