Virginia, Here I Come - My Family Travels

Traveling to Varina, Virginia to attend the Babe Ruth Softball Regional Tournament was definitely interesting.  Oviedo Babe Ruth Softball’s ten and under All-Star team was about to make history.  We drove from Oviedo, Florida to Walterboro, South Carolina the first day of our trip.  We stayed in a Hampton Inn that night where there were two double beds, a twin air mattress and a full air mattress for eight of us sleep.  The surrounding guests thought we were crazy when we all piled in and out of the room in a matter of six hours.  We arrived in Walterboro at 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday and left by 8:00 a.m. to get back on the road.  I am I not a morning person so I did not like having to get up and ready to sit in a car.

We stopped at Arby’s for lunch when another family from our team contacted us about an accident on I-95 that was causing them to sit at a dead stop.  The night before, we had made fun of MeMe for bringing her atlas, but we ended up using the atlas to construct a new route to bypass the accident.  We took Route 301 through part of North Carolina.  It was definitely the “scenic route,” but it got us around the accident.  The towns were older and in the middle of nowhere, but I enjoyed looking at the houses that resembled the ones from Little House on the Prairie.

As we drove through North Carolina, I saw the Prime Outlets that had a Vera Bradley store inside.  I was so excited that I wanted to jump out of the car and run to the store.  Unfortunately, whoever decided that the sliding door on a mini van should lock until the van is parked caused me not to be able to jump out!  Shopping for purses and accessories is my favorite, especially if they are on sale.

When we reached our destination, we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn.  The girls were excited to be there, but we quickly had to leave to attend Opening Ceremonies at softball fields.  These Opening Ceremonies were the quickest that I have ever witnessed.  For dinner we went to the Longhorn Steakhouse in an outdoor mall setting.  The choice of stores was rather odd because there was a Target next to a JCPenny’s.  The other people in the restaurant had to be annoyed at the amount of noise that was coming from our table, but we had fun.

When I awoke in the morning, I was surprised by the comfortably of the bed.  The breakfast buffet was extraordinary.  My favorite part was the French toast where I could choose from different kinds of syrup.  The girls played that afternoon against a team from Tennessee.  The team was decent, but our team was definitely better, giving us the victory 10-0.  After the game we celebrated by the pool.  The only downfall was the pool was inside and the smell of chlorine was deadly, so we moved outside with the rest of the adults to play a round of Holey Board.

The next day, we played Pitt County, North Carolina. We beat Pitt County by a score of 6-0, and our pitcher threw a no-hitter.  After the game we went to the WaWa Convenience Store.  Inside, there were milkshake machines, made to order subs that were a million times better than any Subway, salads that were extremely fresh, freshly baked doughnuts and whatever else you could imagine.

We eventually made it into the Championship game and won against Atlantic Beach, Florida.
