This summer I took a trip with my family to Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. After a several hour drive through the beautiful, winding countryside, we arrived at the lake. Our resort was Barton’s Point, located on a large peninsula that juts into the center of the lake. The entire area was surrounded by water, giving me a feeling as if we were alone – A calming set over me at this time. The view from our room was astonishing; the distant mountains met the water seamlessly, and the sweet country air further separated me from reality. A boat ride proves that much of the lake is like this, but it would take days to complete the trip as the lake is about forty miles long.
This trip, unlike many others, took me from my troubles. For a very short week, I realized the weight and stress that life had placed on me at the time, and I was able to enjoy the time as a more open individual. Though most of the week flew by, one relatively short period of time seemed to last forever. I walked from our room to a remote spot on the resort, away from people and cottages. I sat in the grass at the water’s edge, and watched the sun set on the mountains afar. Everything seemed to dissipate, and I was alone with nature in the most together way.
In this unique time I spent away from myself, I realized that all that time I spend at home questioning every mistake and beating myself up over things out of my control was wasted – It was pointless to worry about things that are unimportant in the long run. I finally learned how to live my life, and enjoy it at the same time – a task I had previously deemed impossible.
I attribute my current happiness and views of life to the solitary and quiet atmosphere that was Smith Mountain Lake. The most unusual trip of my life became the most important – I say unusual because one doesn’t usually learn on vacation – and I thank God for introducing a side of life that was previously hidden.
