Anxiously waiting to get on the road, I began to imagine how the ribs would taste in my mouth as I ripped the meat off the bones. I started to taste a variety of flavors, sauces, and seasonings. I was brought back into my surroundings when my mother announced that we were leaving. At that moment we were off to Reno, Nevada for the Ultimate Rib Cook-off Festival.
As we entered on to the Capital City freeway, I knew we would soon reach our destination. On the way my family and I had lots of laughs, games, and arguments; typical for my family. We all talked about what we expected when we reached the festival. Everyone had different opinions of course. But we all agreed on the fact that we were going to eat and eat plenty.
As I opened my eyes from a deep sleep, mouth wide open, I soon realized we were in the parking lot of the festival. I was suddenly wide awake despite the teasing. I watched my little cousins jumping with excitement, luckily with empty stomachs. We all gathered and headed towards the entrance. As we walked in the aroma of charcoal and seasoned meat filled our noses leading us strait towards the food.
The next thing I know I have a half-rack of ribs in my hands and I’m uncontrollably stuffing my face leaving barbeque sauce all over my mouth. My taste buds bowed down at the feet of the flavors and juices given to them. The meat was practically falling off the bones and not one piece I missed. The moment the combination of sauces, seasonings, and meat reached my tongue the long road trip was worth every mile and minuet.
We migrated to the booths and merchandise trying on hats, jackets, rings, and necklaces. We were walking and laughing, enjoying the presence of family. That day I learned the importance of family and that when no one else is there my family will be. Even though we were in Reno for the ribs we were brought together by the love for one another.
