My Lesson Learned - My Family Travels

Who? Moon Gymnastics Team. Where were we going? Waynesboro High School. Why? To defend our 3 time PA Classic State Championship title. My high school gymnastics team is one of the most important things to me. Each year on the team we travel together to a different part of the state to compete in the state meet. The state meet this year was in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Traveling to this meet always is at the end of the season. The trip was about a three hour drive in vans our high school provided. Every year we got excited to go to the state meet, but this year it was more important than all of the other years, especially to us seniors. Freshman, sophomore, and junior year we won the title. It was amazing. We felt unstoppable. The team was even better this year. We had won sections in western Pennsylvania. We went into the meet with confidence and expectations of winning our fourth and final victory.  The meet was all day in a gym we were not adjusted to. We were not comfortable with their equipment and the judges were unfamiliar because we were across the state. The meet went on and needless to say it was not our best performance. We lost the meet and got second place. After three years of winning you could not imagine the disappointment. The bus ride home was expected to be the worst. The three hours felt unbearable. It was so unexpected. As we drove along my teammates and I began to talk. We were very upset, but look at what we had accomplished. Three state victories, a WPIAL championship, and a section championship. We might not have gotten first but we were still second…in the entire state! The three hour bus ride that was sought to be terrible actually was an eye opener. We realized how great we were. It does not take first place to make a winner. Without this traveling experience across the state and back, I would not have learned the lesson that I learned today. Look at the good things instead of dwelling on the bad.
