Mexico | My Family Travels

My parents are originally from Monterrey, Mexico. In Hispanic culture when a girl turns fifteen she has a Quinceañera. A Quinceañera is a coming of age party celebrated when the young women turns fifteen.

I’ve seen my two older sisters go through their parties and I just couldn’t wait to have my party. I had been planning it since I was twelve. For the Quinceañeras the traditional dress color for the birthday girl is pink. Well I don’t really like pink. So I chose the color orange for my dress.

The planning of a party this big takes about a year of planning. Since we live in Ohio I only had a Summer to plan my party. Right after school was out for Summer my parents sent me to Monterrey, Mexico to stay with my aunts. It had been so long since I had been to Mexico I forgot what it looked like. I forgot how the heat felt after you’ve been in the air conditioning. Oh but the view was beautiful. You could see the amazing mountains, and the town people selling tacos in a cart at the side of the road.

Being in Mexico it’s like being in another world. From how people dress to traffic laws and how the heat is, everything is different. Monterrey where I was staying is surrounded with mountains. It is so beautiful. When I made it to my aunts house I noticed that the houses are even made differently. They aren’t structured like the house you see in the United States.

From the first day I started planning the party. I had to book entertainment, the hall where the party would be held, the food that would be served. All the decision making was very overwhelming. I decided to go with at DJ for the music, and have dancing clowns, that was a big thing going on for Quinceañeras that year. One thing that I was really looking forward to was the photo shoot. Every birthday girl has a photo shoot the same day of her party and chooses one of the photos to be blown up in to a poster size photo framed.

After a month of planning July 5, 2007 finally came. I went to my photo shoot where my hair and make up would be done. Unfortunately I wasn’t the only one having their photo shoot that day. There was another girl before me and she went over time, which meant I was going to be late to my party! After patiently waiting for her to be finished I was able to get ready, have the photo shoot and make it to my party in time.

I enjoy going to Mexico every three years. It is so beautiful and weekly the people have a “Farmers Market” where hand grown goods are selled, or hand made blankets, dresses, purses, you name it the made it. The “Farmers Market” extended for streets and streets maybe even a block. These markets were huge. It almost took a day to see every booth. I recommend going to Monterrey, Mexico for all the wonderful culture you can see by just walking around the city. It’s a whole new world there.
