In April of 2010, my guidance counselor told me that I was nominated to be a delegate from Hamilton High School to Alabama Boys State. I was so excited. It was a great honor for myself and my three fellow delegates from Hamilton to be able to attend this very distinguished experience. It was only two hundred dollars to go for a week at the University of Alabama to learn about our local and state governments instead of focusing on the federal government. My fellow delegates from Hamilton High School were Tommy Gray, Collin Akers, and Jordan Busby.

Our families and we made the trip to Tuscaloosa early on May 30, 2010. We were then signed in and our families left. We had no idea who anyone was as we were separated into different groups, called cities, but once we met everyone, all four of us made friends.  We then stayed at the University for a whole week.  We all connected with our city members; each city had its own basketball team and my city’s team had three wins out of four games and we really worked well together.  Our head counselor even said that we might choose our best man from among our city members.

I had many highlights during that week, including seeing Nick Saben for one of our general sessions and doing volunteer work at a local elementary school.  Getting selected to be on the city council was fun also.  We also saw many important figures in our government, including an Alabama Supreme Court Justice.  I learned alot from these important speakers that we had for our general sessions.

When the week finally ended, nobody wanted to go home.  We had so much fun learning about the responsibility of local and state governments.  We all vowed that we would keep in touch with everybody and to this day we still are.  The connections I made there are irreplaceable and I am so glad I went and don’t regret a single minute of it.
