That Stings. - My Family Travels

I knew this trip would be different. But my gut feeling was beside the point. The point was that as I sat in the passenger seat of that awkward, white truck I saw a wasp clinging to the side of our vehicle. I thought to myself how ironic it was that this wasp, an insect that can fly, was clinging to our truck for dear life. Little did this wasp know that he would just glide to safety if he let go. I wanted nothing more in this moment than to be able to tell the wasp this. As I thought these things, the wasp flew off and I couldn’t help but look back to see what had happened to it. I couldn’t see where it had gone but I was almost positive, for some reason, that it was fine.

That week was beyond my expectations. We all swam, ate, and played like we never had before. It was truly the most wonderful trip I’ve been on in years. I was able to let go and not worry about school, work, or anything for that matter. I met lots of new people and my relationships with my friends became stronger. This trip was the first time I had ever walked on the sand dunes. They were amazing. We all intended on going hang gliding and even found this nice place close to milepost 1 called "KittyHawk Kites" to sign up for lessons. Once we were all signed up, I decided to back out. I had never done anything even close to hang gliding and decided it wasn’t for me. Some of my friends approached me saying “it’ll be fun!” and other inspirational phrases that I was adamant on ignoring. I was positive that jumping off a hill with an oversized kite was not my thing. As I explained to my friends why I did not want to go I was stung in the back of my leg by, none other than, a wasp.

I ended up going through with it. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. If you were to ask any of my friends now, they consider me to be the most open minded of the group. This of course was not always the case. Sometimes we just need to learn to let go.
