Few people have probably watched The Bucket List movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson and contemplated their own life and goals afterwards. I remember sitting with friends making my own bucket list. Being young there are many things on my list and it is constantly evolving but there is a common theme of adventure in my items. When my family went on a vacation to Atlantis Resort in Paradise Island, Bahamas, it seemed there were many opportunities to check some off. One of the things you can do at the resort is Walk With Sharks.
I had no idea what this involved but decided that since I had the chance I would sign up for it. I arrived the morning at the location and was fitted for a wetsuit and watched a video on what would happen during my time with the sharks. I went to the ladder area where they placed the helmet with clear glass on my head. As I descended into the water I had to stop and make sure my ears were doing ok with the pressure. The sharks were swimming around the area as I reached the bottom. I gave a thumbs up to my guide and we started walking around the area. There were sharks of various sizes. Most of the sharks were larger than I am. We moved slowly and it was amazing seeing them up close. As we were walking my guide pointed out shark teeth occasionally that a shark had lost. I picked one up and he motioned that I could keep it. I’m back home in rural Minnesota now. The closest place to look at a shark is two hours away in Underwater World at Mall of America. For some people the tanks at the mall is as close as they care to be to a shark but I had the opportunity of a lifetime to say I went in the water with them and took it. There is no guarantee when any of us will “kick the bucket” and I want to make sure my bucket will be overflowing with memories.
